What is walk score?

Walk Score is a 0-100 rating that measures how walkable an address is based on its distance to nearby amenities like grocery stores, restaurants, parks, schools, and public transit.

A numeric rating between 0 and 100, Walk Score quantifies pedestrian-friendliness by analyzing distances from an address to nearby amenities in key categories: grocery stores, restaurants and cafes, shopping, coffee shops, banks, parks, schools, and public transit. The algorithm rewards proximity and penalizes distance, then scales the result into the 0-100 range.

Scores break down into categories that reflect practical walkability. A score of 90-100 ("Walker's Paradise") means daily errands do not require a car. 70-89 ("Very Walkable") indicates most errands can be accomplished on foot. 50-69 ("Somewhat Walkable") means some errands are walkable. 25-49 ("Car-Dependent") suggests most errands require a car. Below 25 ("Almost All Errands Require a Car") indicates minimal pedestrian infrastructure nearby.

For Austin apartment hunters, Walk Score appears in many listings as a quick reference for how much car dependency a location entails. Addresses in central neighborhoods like Downtown, East Austin, and areas near Lady Bird Lake tend to score higher. Suburban locations and those farther from commercial districts typically score lower. Walk Score operates independently and does not account for hills, weather, personal fitness, or other real-world factors that affect actual walking conditions. It serves as one data point among many when evaluating neighborhood accessibility.
